Why runtime evidence matters

Source code describes what a system could do. Runtime events help explain what happened during a particular request. When an AI assistant is investigating a failed checkout or an unexpected integration response, that distinction matters.

My approach is to connect the assistant to structured evidence: event names, timestamps, request identifiers, and application-specific fields. It can narrow an investigation around observed behavior, then return to the source code with a more precise question.

Two tools, complementary roles

Seq MCP connects a compatible JetBrains IDE to Seq through the IDE’s built-in Model Context Protocol server. Its tools can search structured events, execute Seq SQL queries, inspect signals and dashboards, and create links back to events.

Magento Seq supplies local Magento instrumentation. It forwards Monolog records and custom PHP or JavaScript events as structured CLEF logs. The developer chooses the event names and context; it does not automatically record AI prompts or model responses.

The tools are independent. Seq MCP can query events from other applications, and Magento Seq events can be explored directly in Seq.

A practical investigation loop

  1. Reproduce the behavior in a local development environment.
  2. Record meaningful application events and request context in Seq.
  3. Ask the connected assistant to query the relevant events and investigate the sequence.
  4. Use the evidence to identify a code path, propose a change, and design a regression test.
  5. Run the scenario again and compare the resulting behavior.

This makes an investigation more inspectable. The evidence still needs interpretation, and absent events do not prove that a behavior did not occur.

Requirements and scope

Magento Seq is for local development only. It exposes a local event collection endpoint and is not intended for production installation.

Seq MCP requires a compatible JetBrains IDE with its built-in MCP server, a connected AI assistant, a reachable Seq server, and project-level plugin configuration. Check the repository and Marketplace for the current IDE requirements.

Credentials are configured in the IDE. The plugin uses JetBrains Password Safe for stored API keys. Event quality depends on the instrumentation you add and the data available in Seq.

Common questions

Is Seq MCP a standalone MCP server?

No. It exposes tools through the built-in JetBrains MCP server. Your AI assistant connects to that IDE server.

Does this require Magento?

Seq MCP can query Seq events from other applications. Magento Seq is an optional, Magento-specific event producer for local development.

Does telemetry make an AI answer deterministic?

Telemetry supplies concrete observations. It does not make the model deterministic or automatically validate its conclusions. Tests and human review remain part of the workflow.
